A Brief History of Clan MacDougall

The Clan MacDougall motto is ‘Buaidh no bàs’ (‘Victory or Death’) and were a Highland clan, from the Argyll district of Scotland. The name comes from Dubgall, the son of a Norse-Gaelic lord and is derived from the Gaelic ‘dubh-gall’, which means ‘dark foreigner’.

During the Wars of Independence, the clan fought alongside William Wallace but became embroiled in a conflict with Robert the Bruce. At the Battle of Dalrigh in 1306, the MacDougalls actually prevailed over Bruce. As a result, after Bruce’s victory at Bannockburn in 1314 which saw him become King of Scots, the MacDougall’s lost their holdings.

In spite of this, the MacDougalls eventually fought alongside the Jacobites at the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689 as devoted followers of the Stewart family.

The MacDougall tartan features a striking red and green colour combination with blue and white linework to complete the design. This tartan is available in ancient, modern and muted variants.
