Brief History Clan Hay

The Clan Hay’s motto is ‘Serva Jugum’ (Keep the yoke).

The Normandy region of the Cotentin Peninsula, on France's northeastern coast, is home to a collection of villages known as La Haye, which takes its name from the old German word ‘Haga’ (meaning hedge or defensive wall). This region is where the name Hay derives from, with the Gaelic translation being Garadh or MacGaradh.

William II de Haya was the earliest Hay known to exist in Scotland and was the Cup Bearer to King Malcolm IV in 1160. In 1178, King William the Lion awarded the Barony of Errol to either William or his son as a result of their marriage to Eva of Pitmilly, a Celtic heiress. It was William II who rose to become the Clan's first Chief.

The Hay tartan consists mainly of red and green colours, complemented with yellow, black and white linework. The Hay tartan is available in both Ancient and Modern variants.
